The coupon approach has the advantage of integrating a number of the environmental effects contributing to corrosion, such as gas, temperature, moisture and other chemically active particles.  The coupons also give an indication of the severity of the environment.

For example, if coupon exposure shows a discoloration beyond a golden brown within four to six months, it may indicate an elevated exposure level in the area under test.

If coupon exposure exhibits a blue-black or black flaky appearance, it is likely that electronic equipment will be degraded at this site.
